Nevada Dusters record: 36-13
The Dusters had to travel from coast to coast for three more with the New York Mets. It was to be their 25th game without a break, and they were tired. But there was some good news. Fully recovered after four weeks on the DL, starter Al Downing rejoined the team in the Big Apple and was plugged into the rotation to pitch the third game of the series. The Dusters came out swinging in Game 1, scoring three runs in the top of the 1st. They traded a run for two outs in a twin killing in the bottom of the 1st, but got that run back, and then some, in the 4th. Billy Williams hit a two-run single, Mets starter Al Jackson walked in a run with bases loaded, and New York third sacker Cliff Cook's throwing error allowed yet another run. Nevada added two more in the 8th off reliever Grover Powell and the score was 10-1, a seemingly insurmountable lead with Steve Barber on the mound having allowed just three hits in seven innings. But the Mets made a game of it in the 8th. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Charlie Neal's RBI single, and Frank Thomas followed with a grand slam that sent Barber packing. Bill Dailey came in to get three outs in that frame, and Reniff allowed one run in the 9th, and the Dusters won 10-7. Barber recorded his eighth win in eleven starts, Billy Williams went 2-for-5 with RBIs, and catcher J.C. Martin was 3-for-5 with two runs scored.

Nevada Dusters record: 37-13
As in Game 1, the Dusters took a 3-0 lead in Game 2's first frame, thanks in part to Jerry Adair's two-run dinger. A Charlie Neal solo homer in the third cut the lead by one in the 3rd. Then, in the 4th, the wheels came off for Nevada starter Joe Horlen. He hit Frank Thomas with a pitch and walked Cliff Cook to set up a two-run triple by Al Moran. Jim Hickman tripled in Moran, Charlie Neal drew a walk, and Duke Snider reached base on a fielding error by Jim Fregosi that allowed Hickman to score. Suddenly it was 5-3 New York. So it remained until the Nevada 7th, when singles by Billy Williams and Adair set up a two-run double by Albie Pearson. Pearson reached third on a long fly ball off Donn Clendenon's bat and scored when Vic Power singled. The Dusters only briefly enjoyed their 6-5 lead, as the Mets picked up another run in the bottom of the 7th. In the 9th the Dusters pulled off a suicide squeeze to go ahead by one again, and again, in the bottom of the inning, New York tied it. Clete Boyer led off the Dusters 10th with a single, stole second, and scored on a Johnny Roseboro double. Dave DeBusschere pitched in the 10th and shut down the Mets to secure the 8-7 win. Williams was 4-for-5 on the day with three runs scored and Roseboro was 1-for-3 with two walks and the crucial 10th-inning RBI. Seven of Nevada's fourteen hits were for extra-bases: five doubles, a triple, and Adair's 15th home run of the season.

Nevada Dusters record: 37-14
Wanting to rest some of his starters for the upcoming series against the second-place Cubs, Naylor installed Vic Power at first, Bob Saverine at second, and George Banks at third for Game 3. In his first start back from four weeks on the DL, Al Downing pitched superbly, striking out twelve and allowing seven hits and no runs through eight innings of work. His mound opponent, Jay Hook, pitched well, too, and the Dusters led 2-0 going into the 9th inning. Bill Dailey took the hill for Nevada in the bottom of the 9th, and promptly walked Cliff Cook. Naylor was just as prompt in pulling Dailey and inserting closer Hal Reniff, who struck out the next two New York batters. But then Jim Hickman reached on a fielding error by Banks at third, and Charlie Neal reached on an error by shortstop Jim Fregosi, setting the stage for Duke Snider's two-run single that sent the game into extra innings. Pumpsie Green started the Mets 11th with a triple and pinch hitter Rod Kanehl singled him in to win the game for the home team. Nevada had to settle for taking two of three with the Amazin' Mets. "We were lucky to win two," groused Ben Naylor, unhappy with the five Nevada errors committed in the series. "Too many mistakes to suit me."
