NEVADA DUSTERS
May 1963 Recap

The Story of a
Major League
Baseball Franchise

Billy Williams, Jim Fregosi, Hal Reniff, Bob Saverine
The month in review. The Nevada Dusters remained in first place in the NL standings throughout the month of May, but as June approached the St. Louis Cardinals were closing fast, and entered June in second place just four games behind. Nevada's May record of 18-10 had some sportswriters suggesting that the team was "cooling off" from its 21-6 start in April. Conn Hudson pointed out that at the end of April the Dusters were fifteen games above .500, and at the end of May were twenty-four games above. If the Dusters had cooled off it was because of its injury-plagued pitching staff. Al Downing had missed the entire month, while Claude Raymond and Dwight Siebler had both missed about two weeks. But the club entered June with all three hurlers back in the lineup. During their absence, Denny McLain was called up from AAA and performed admirably, going 1-and-1 with a 3.86 ERA in two starts. Of concern to some was starting catcher Johnny Roseboro's below-.200 batting average, and Clete Boyer's mark that was barely above .200. But Roseboro and Boyer were, arguably, the best defensive players on the team, and as long as the rest of the lineup produced, the lack of hitting at the bottom of the order could be tolerated. Three players (Albie Pearson .311, Jerry Adair .345, and Jim Fregosi .313) had averages above .300, while Billy Williams hovered near the mark with .297. The team had hit 58 homers and stolen 33 bases on the year, while the pitching staff had a collective win-loss record of 39-16. The "Miracle in the Desert," as Las Vegas Sun sports editor Al Childress had called the club's great showing early in the '63 campaign, had proved to be no fluke, and few doubted that the Dusters would be contending for the pennant as the season progressed. Several trades were concluded in May, with Nevada acquiring pitcher Joe Hoerner from Houston for reliever Jack Spring, and swapping Bill Faul to the Cubs for Jim Brewer. Brewer went to the bullpen while Hoerner joined the Bakersfield Bullets, as did 18-year-old Ed Kranepool (1B/OF), acquired from the Mets for backup catcher Doug Camilli and minor-league outfielder Bob Perry. In every case Hudson made sure that Nevada came out ahead financially, and May ended with the club one of only four in the National League showing a profit on the year. When asked his prediction for June, Manager Ben Naylor told the press that the Dusters faced some big challenges. "But these boys are up to it," he said.
