Minnesota Twins @ Nevada Dusters
GAME 1
October 19, 1963
Horizon Field
Las Vegas, NV

BILLY'S BIG BLAST
There was standing room only at Horizon Field as the Twins and the Dusters met for Game 1 of the 1963 World Series. Nevada started the Fall Classic with a distinct disadvantage -- second-baseman and team home-run leader Jerry Adair was out three days with a strained back suffered during BP the day before. Ben Naylor insisted that he wasn't worried. He had Julio Gotay to plug into Adair's place, and Gotay would do a fine job.  "I[m just sorry Jerry is going to miss the first couple of games, since he's a big reason we're here," said Nails. The first game matched Steve Barber (24-4) against Camilo Pascual (19-7).
The Twins drew first blood, with center fielder Lenny Green launching the 1st with a double and then scoring when Eddie Mathews hit his own two-bagger. But Mathews tested Lee Maye's arm by trying to make third and was thrown out for his trouble. The Dusters went quietly in their half of the 1st, three-up, three-down against Pascual. Nevada tied it in the 2nd when Clete Boyer's double scored Lee Maye. It wasn't one of Minnesota's Big Three but rather right fielder Bob Allison -- who had 33 home runs of his own for 1963 -- who struck the three-run blow to center in the Twins 3rd, and it was 4-1. In the bottom of the 3rd Donn Clendenon singled and stole second with one out, but Billy Williams popped up and Julio Gotay struck out for the second time in the game, giving Nevada fans cause to wonder just how much Adair's absence would hurt their team. Then, in the Dusters 4th, Pascual came unglued. Having struck out six Nevada batters in the first three frames, he gave up a single to Fregosi before walking Maye, Roseboro, Barber and Pearson, and the Dusters had two runs. With two outs, Williams came to the plate with a teammate on every base and hit a towering grand slam home run into the right field bleachers to make it 7-4 Nevada. Pascual went to the showers.
Naylor pinch hit Vic Powers for Barber in the 6th. "Steve had been through their order three times and they'd seen all his pitches so I wasn't going to give them a fourth look." As he had so often during the regular season, he entrusted the game to his bullpen. In the Nevada 7th Gotay singled and scored on a Maye single.  After pitching a scoreless 7th, Claude Raymond served up three consecutive singles in the 8th to make it 8-5. Bill Dailey replaced him on the mound with the bases juiced and induced a grounder from pinch hitter Don Dillard that the Dusters infield turned for their second double play to get out of the jam. Johnny Roseboro opened the Nevada 8th with a single, George Banks was hit by a Dick Stigman pitch, and Albie Pearson walked to give the Dusters another bases-loaded opportunity. Roseboro tagged up at third and scored on a Billy Williams sac fly and Julio Gotay drove in Banks to give the Dusters a 10-5 advantage. With that kind of lead, Naylor saved closer Hal Reniff for another day and summoned Bob Duliba from the bullpen for the Minnesota 9th, and Duliba efficiently retired the side. Jerry Adair's replacement, Julio Gotay, went 2-for-5 and figured into a pair of decisive twin killings. But the league's batting champ, Billy Williams, was the talk of the town; Williams had gone 1-for-4, but that one was the big blast that gave the Dusters a lead they would not relinquish. Conn Hudson gave credit to the Nevada pitching staff, who had held the Minnesota big guns of Mathews, Mincher and Killebrew to just four hits -- three singles and a double.
