Nevada Dusters record: 48-19
The Dusters met the Pittsburgh Pirates for the first time -- and in Game 1 of the series at Horizon Field were shut out for the first time since mid-May, and only the third time this year. Nevada starter Dave McNally pitched a strong seven innings, giving up two runs on six hits. Those two runs came in the 4th, when Roberto Clemente's single set the table for Jim Pagliaroni's two-run shot over the right field fence. "It was the only bad pitch Dave threw," said Ben Naylor, after the game, "and Pagliaroni made him pay for it." But as well as McNally pitched, Pirates hurler Vern Law (9 ip, 6 h, 2 bb, 0 r, 0 er, 6 k) did even better. Law entered the game with a 1-and-4 record, but he owned the Nevada batters from the first strike. The Dusters posed a threat in the 3rd, when Albie Pearson beat out an infield single and moved to third when Lee Maye reached second on a fielding error committed by Pittsburgh shortstop Dick Schofield. But Law fanned Jerry Adair and ended the inning. Only one other time -- in the 8th -- did two Nevada players reach in the same frame, and, as before, nothing came of it. Donn Clendenon was the only Dusters batter with much success against Law, going 2-for-4. McNally, whom Naylor referred to as "our hard-luck kid," got his fourth loss to go with five wins.

NevadaDusters record: 49-19
In Game 2 Pete Richert was inconsistent in the early going, walking several Pittsburgh batters and throwing his mound opponent, Bob Friend, a pitch that Friend hit for a two-run double in the Pirates 2nd. That tied the game, as, in the 1st, Jerry Adair had crushed one into the upper rows in left field for two Nevada runs. Clete Boyer, who was 4-for-4 on the day with two runs and three RBIs, tripled in the 3rd and scored when Johnny Roseboro grounded to third, with Boyer taking off as soon as Pittsburgh third-baseman Johnny Logan threw to first. Lou Klimchock's throw to the plate was in time, but Pirates catcher Jim Pagliaroni couldn't hold onto the ball in the subsequent collision with Boyer. In the Pittsburgh 4th, Richert gave up a pair of singles and then hit Friend with a pitch to load the bases, but escaped without allowing another run. In the 6th Boyer hit a two-run homer deep to center to make it 6-2 Nevada. It was Boyer's tenth long ball of the season. The Dusters added another run in the 7th while reliever Jim Brewer struck out three of the seven batters he faced in the final two frames to preserve the lead. Richert (7 ip, 7 h, 3 bb, 2 r, 2 er, 6 k) improved his record to 6-and-1.

Nevada Dusters record: 50-19
Ten-game winner Steve Barber took the mound for Nevada in the third game and overpowered the Pittsburgh hitters in the early going. Not until the 5th did the Bucs get their first hit and it wasn't until the 7th that they got a run -- two, in fact, on a Bill Mazeroski homer to right. By then, though, the Dusters had already put up eight runs. There were three in the 1st, when Nevada combined three singles with a pair of walks and brought eight men to the plate. Jim Fregosi's solo homer in the 3rd -- the 75th by Nevada batters in '63 -- made it 4-0, and a fielding error Pirates center fielder Bill Virdon gave them a 5-0 lead in the 4th. (That was one of three errors committed by Pittsburgh fielders.) In the 8th Steve Barber opened with a double and scored when Gary Kolb hit a two-bagger right behind him; then two walks issued by Pirates reliever Bob Veale, a single off the bat of Billy Williams, and another Pittsburgh error, this one by first baseman Lou Klimchock, made it 8-0. It could have been worse -- the Dusters left twelve men stranded in the course of the game. With Albie Pearson getting a day off, Kolb took the lead-off spot and went 4-for-4 with three runs and an RBI. Barber got eight strikeouts on the way to his fourth complete game in fifteen starts, and the Nevada Dusters had their fiftieth win of the season, reaching that milestone just slightly ahead of the AL-leading Minnesota Twins, who had a record of 49-20.
