Nevada Dusters (3) @ Minnesota Twins (0)
GAME 4
October 23, 1963
Metropolitan Stadium
Minneapolis, MN

McNALLY'S LUCK
One of the big issues with regard to Game 4 was whether Dave McNally should be the starting pitcher for the Nevada Dusters. McNally had the second-best ERA in the rotation, but he also had the worst record, at 11-11. There were some who thought the Dusters should skip McNally and start Pete Richert (13-4), who had occupied the # 5 spot in the rotation all season long. Then, if the there was a fifth game, ace Steve Barber would be available. But Ben Naylor would have none of it, and met with Conn Hudson to discuss the McNally question. "He deserves the start," said Nails, "and  I won't be the one to tell him he isn't good enough to pitch for us." Hudson agreed that McNally should take the mound in Game 4, though he admitted that the Dusters being up three games to none made the decision an easy one.
The Dusters came out swinging against Twins starter Frank Sullivan, with Pearson opening the 1st with a single and scoring on a Donn Clendenon triple. Then Clendenon scored on a Billy Williams two-bagger. And Williams crossed the pay station when Clete Boyer singled to left. McNally whipped through the Minnesota lineup the first time without difficulty -- the Twins scored a run in the 3rd playing small ball. Meanwhile, Sullivan settled down and held the Dusters in check through five innings. In the Twins 5th McNally allowed four consecutive singles. One run scored and the bases were loaded with two outs as Harmon Killebrew came to the plate. McNally struck out the slugger and Nevada clung to a 3-2 lead. It was 4-2 in the 7th when Pearson walked, stole second, and scored on a Williams double, his second of the game. Bill Dailey took the mound for the Dusters, allowing one hit and no runs. But Claude Raymond, who took over in the Minnesota 8th, didn't fare so well. Killebrew homered off Raymond's first pitch, and the Nevada reliever served up three singles which, coupled with a Jim Fregosi error on what should have been a routine ground ball out off Johnny Goryl's bat, added up to two more runs -- and gave the Twins a 5-4 lead. Hal Reniff replaced Raymond and stopped the bleeding, but the damage was done. The Dusters had loaded the bases in the top of the 8th and got nothing out of it. In the top of the 9th Lee Maye hit a two-out double against Twins reliever Fred Gladding, but Maye was left stranded and the Dusters -- at one point just six outs away from a World Series sweep of their opponents -- were going to have to wait another day. The Twins had averted disaster. Raymond took the loss and, once again, McNally's luck was bad. He'd pitched well -- two runs on seven hits through five innings -- but that Fall Classic win eluded him.
