Nevada Dusters (3) @ Minnesota Twins (1)
GAME 5
October 24, 1963
Metropolitan Stadium
Minneapolis, MN

A FATAL MISTAKE
The pres speculated at length about how the result of Game 3 might affect the psyche of the two teams. The win had given the Twins hope. Would they now come on strong and turn the tables on the Dusters? Nevada had been six outs away from sweeping Minnesota and winning the World Series. Would failure to do so shake their confidence? Conn Hudson appeared sublimely confident that his team would prevail in the end. For his part, Ben Naylor shook his head when questioned about his team's mind-set. "I've seen these guys play under pressure all year long. They don't knuckle under."
The Twins starter was Camilo Pascual, who had faced Steve Barber in the first game of the series. His mound opponent was Pete Richert, the # 5 man on the Dusters rotation. Hudson and Naylor had made it clear that if the series went to five games, all five members of the rotation would start. For one thing, this would leave ace Steve Barber and # 2 man Joe Horlen available for Games 6 and 7 respectively, if needed. For another, it was only fair in their mind that all five pitchers have their day in the Fall Classic. "They all played a role in getting us here," Hudson told reporters, "and now that we're here they'll get a chance to contribute."
Richert and Pascual put on a pitching clinic in the first five innings. The Dusters had two men on base in the 2nd but couldn't score. The same fate befell the Twins in their half of the inning and again in the bottom of the 3rd. Nevada also had a pair of baserunners in the 4th yet came away empty. In the Minnesota 4th Harmon Killebrew reached third base -- and was stranded there. And so it went until the 6th, when Earl Battey hit a two-out double over the head of Albie Pearson in center. Johnny Goryl was issued a pass, and Zoilo Versalles cranked one into the left field grandstand for a 3-0 Twins lead. (Why was Goryl, who had gotten only two hits in previous games, intentionally walked on three occasions? Naylor explained that Goryl had been a better hitter with men on base than Versalles all season long.) In the Nevada 7th Johnny Roseboro walked, stole second, went to third on a George Banks single, and scored when Donn Clendenon hit a looping liner that dropped into right field. The Dusters loaded the bases with two outs in the 8th, but pinch-hitter Vic Power flied out to end the threat. And in the 9th the Dusters were three-up, three-down against Minnesota reliever Fred Gladding. Nevada had managed seven hits, and six of them were singles. Richert pitched well -- save for that one fatal mistake offered to Versalles -- but took the loss. The Dusters' lead in the series had narrowed to 3-2. But Conn Hudson wasn't worried. "This just means we'll win the series at home, and that will be a big treat for Nevada Duster fans."
