Nevada Dusters record: 12-4
The Dusters returned home for their second series of the month with the Houston Colt .45's (8-7), hoping to extend their win streak to six games behind the pitching of Steve Barber. In an effort to get Tony Oliva's bat into the lineup, Ben Naylor started the outfielder at second base to give Jerry Adair a break. Oliva went 1-for-3, accounting for one of the three hits the Dusters managed to get off Jim Bronstad, who had replaced Russ Kemmerer (out three months with severe elbow tendonitis) in the Colt .45's starting rotation. Bronstad hadn't pitched in the majors since 1959 (0-3, 5.22), but today he outshone Cy Young-winner Barber, holding the Dusters to one run in seven innings while striking out seven. Not that Barber pitched badly -- 6.0 ip,  4 h,  2 bb,  3 r,  2 er,  4 k -- but a mistake with Houston catcher Hal Smith at the plate resulted in a two-run homer. That was all the scoring the Colt .45's needed with Bronstad so dominant; their third run came as a result of a Nevada error. Denis Menke's third home run of the season accounted for the only Duster score. Nevada found itself in a tie with the San Francisco Giants for first place in the National League.

With # 2 starter Joe Horlen still two weeks away from returning from his injury, Dwight Siebler got the nod in Game 2 -- and, as in his previous start, fully justified the faith the Dusters organization had in him. He gave up just two hits to the potent Houston lineup in the first five innings, during which Nevada jumped out to a 4-0 lead. The first Duster run came in the 2nd, when Johnny Roseboro walked, stole second, went to third on a Clete Boyer single, and scored when Jerry Adair grounded to third; the throw to the plate was in time, but Roseboro plowed over Houston catcher Hal Brown, jarring the ball loose -- much to the delight of the crowd, which was still steamed over Brown's game-winning homer of the day before. Denis Menke opened the 4th with a double, Roseboro followed with a single, and Jerry Adair -- Nevada's home run leader in '63 -- hit his first long ball of the season. Houston scored in the 6th when Aaron Pointer reached on a fielding error by center fielder Albie Pearson and Johnny Temple singled; ex-Duster Jim Fregosi hit a three-sacker over the head of Lee Maye in right that scored two and later scored himself to make it a 4-3 ballgame. Nevada answered right back in the bottom of the 6th, loading the bases with three consecutive singles off relief pitcher Jack Spring; Oliva drove in one run with a sac fly and Donn Clendenon singled in another. Roseboro's two-run single in the 8th extended the lead to 8-3, and Bob Duliba extended his run of scoreless innings to 14.1 as he stymied the Colt '45's in the 8th and 9th. Roseboro went 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs, and two RBIs. Siebler, allowing two earned runs on five hits through six innings, earned his second win in as many starts.
