NEVADA DUSTERS
June 1963 Recap

The Story of a
Major League
Baseball Franchise
Jerry Adair, Bill Dailey, Lee Maye, J.C. Martin
The month in review. The Nevada Dusters continued to have success in June, with an 18-6 record for the month, winning seven of the eight series played. They had not yet lost more than two games in a row. Clearly the Dusters pitching was the key; opposing teams scored more than five runs in only three games. Steve Barber was tied for first place in the NL with eleven wins, and was first in winning percentage (.846). Teammate Joe Horlen (5-1) was second in that category (.833). The starters had a combined won-lost record of 36-10 at the end of June, and a combined ERA of 3.40. Closer Hal Reniff led the NL with 29 saves. The bullpen contained a couple more bonafide firemen: Claude Raymond had a 1.54 ERA in 46.2 innings pitched, while Bill Dailey's 1.15 ERA had been earned through 47.0 innings of work. The Dusters offense, while not explosive, was consistently good enough to win behind quality pitching. In June Nevada had scored double-digit runs in only two games, and fourteen of the twenty-four games had been decided by two runs or less. Jerry Adair entered the month with 15 homers and a .345 average; by the end of June he had added only two more round-trippers and his BA had dropped to .291. But first baseman Donn Clendenon had come alive at the plate, increasing his average from .265 to .303 during the month, earning himself a move up to the # 2 spot in the lineup -- right behind Albie Pearson, who proved himself the ultimate lead-off man. Pearson's .436 OBP led the NL, and his production mark of .938 was surpassed only by Hank Aaron (CHC) and Bill White (STL). Pearson, Clendenon and Williams were in the top ten in batting average in the NL, and Williams' ten triples put him in a tie for first in that category with the likes of Roberto Clemente (PIT) and Willie Davis (LAD). At the bottom of the order, third sacker Clete Boyer (.231, 11, 27) and catcher Johnny Roseboro (.192, 8, 25) didn't hit for average, but their combined nineteen homers gave opposing hurlers something to worry about, and their defense was top quality. George Banks (.323, 5, 17), who could play in the outfield or third base, and outfielder Gary Kolb (.342, 3, 18), were a potent threat off the bench. In the end, the Dusters expanded their lead from four games to seven atop the NL, and as June came  to a close no one doubted that Nevada was a genuine contender. Even so, owner/general manager Conn Hudson cautioned against over-confidence, and skipper Ben Naylor told reporters that he expected "a patch or two of rough sledding" before the season was over.
