Unconcerned with standings and wanting to adjust the team salary via trades before the month was out, Hudson urged Ben Naylor to play as many people as possible. Going up against the 1-and-8 Mets seemed like a good opportunity, and to that end, in Game 1 of Nevada's first away series, George Banks replaced Clete Boyer at third and Julio Gotay played shortstop instead of Jim Fregosi. Both players responded, with Banks (3-for-5, 3 R, 4 RBI) contributing a three-run homer in the 2nd, and Gotay going 2-for-5 with two runs. Lee Maye was 3-for-5 with a pair of runs and two ribbies, while Donn Clendenon hammered the first Nevada Dusters grand slam in the 4th. Starter Pete Richert (8.0 ip, 3 h, 0 bb, 2 r, 2 er, 5 k) had little trouble with the anemic (.187 BA) Mets lineup, while the Dusters collected a season-high 17 hits in a 13-2 rout of the home team.

Nevada Dusters record: 9-2
In Game 2, Steve Barber walked six Mets but allowed just one hit and no runs through seven innings, long enough for the Nevada bats, silenced by New York starter Carl Willey for seven frames, to come to life against reliever Tracy Stallard in the 8th. Power, starting at second base in place of Jerry Adair, got a lead-off single. Then Clendenon and Roseboro singled to juice the bases. Pinch hitting for Barber, Adair knocked in all three base runners with a triple. Nevada reliever Jack Spring, seeing his first action of the season, served up a home run to Duke Snider in the bottom of the 8th. Hal Reniff walked Mets third baseman Cliff Cook to start the bottom of the 9th, but Al Moran hit into a double play and Pumpsie Green's grounder provided the final out. Final score: Dusters 3, Mets 1.

Nevada Dusters 10-2
Naylor started Gary Kolb in center field in place of Albie Pearson, George Banks in left for Billy Williams, and Doug Camilli behind the plate instead of Johnny Roseboro in Game 3. The Dusters took a 2-0 lead in the 2nd when Kolb tripled in the left field gap to plate Camilli and Joe Horlen, both of whom had singled before him. But the Mets would not lay down, tying the game at 3 in the 6th when Duke Snider's double, an intentional walk to Gil Hodges, and a walk issued by Horlen to Frank Thomas set the stage for a two-run single off the bat of Sammy Taylor. In the 7th Kolb homered and Maye singled in a run before Mets reliever Larry Bearnarth, with the bases loaded, walked Clete Boyer. The Dusters got two more runs in the 9th when Vic Power, replacing Donn Clendenon at first base, hit a two-run homer. Nevada reliever Claude Raymond surrendered a long ball to Al Moran in the bottom of the 9th, and Hal Reniff came to the mound with two outs and two men on to strike out Duke Snider, registering his sixth save. Kolb went 2-for-5 with a run and three RBIs while Banks finished 1-for-3 with a walk and a run. Naylor thought both of the young outfielders were keepers, and Conn Hudson agreed. Having swept the struggling Mets, the Dusters headed home to play the rest of April's games at Horizon Field.
