Nevada Dusters record: 110-48
Wanting to get all his regulars into one game in this series, Ben Naylor returned Albie Pearson to center, Jerry Adair to second, Lee Maye to right field, and Clete Boyer to third. Of course, Billy Williams remained in the lineup to battle for the NL batting title. Dwight Siebler got his eighth start, with Joe Horlen still on the DL with a hand stress fracture. Siebler faced a tough opponent in Joey Jay (15-5). With two on in the 3rd, Williams grounded into a double play, but Pearson scored to make it 1-0. Vada Pinson's RBI double in the Reds 5th tied it up. With one on and two out in the Cincinnati 6th, Naylor ordered an intentional pass issued to Johnny Edwards, in hopes that Reds Manager Fred Hutchinson would pull Jay for a pinch hitter. He did, and it cost the Reds. Clete Boyer's three-run homer off reliever AlWorthington in the 6th gave Nevada some breathing room, and Jerry Adair's three-run blast in the 7th off Joe Nuxhall blew the game wide open. A fielding error by rookie Denis Menke gave the Reds a bases loaded situation in the 8th, but Hal Reniff denied them a run. Siebler's record improved to 4-2 and Adair's 25 homers made him team leader in that category.

Nevada Dusters recordL 110-49
The only regular in the Nevada starting lineup for Game 3 was Jim Fregosi. Naylor assured the press that they would see the regular batting order in all the games of the final series of the season, so this was the last opportunity for the bench players and those recently called up from AAA Bakersfield. The Dusters lost the game because of shaky pitching by starter Al Downing (6.0 ip, 6 h, 3 bb, 4 r, 4 er, 2 k) and a pair of costly errors by outfielders George Banks and Gary Kolb. The Reds took a 3-0 lead in the 1st with Vada Pinson hitting a solo homer and Gene Freese a two-run single. In the 4th Downing served up another home run ball -- this one to Don Blasingame, to make it 4-0. In the 7th, against reliever Claude Raymond, the Reds loaded the bases with a single, a walk, and a hit batsmen. Then came the two errors and three more Cincinnati runs. Raymond retired the next three batters to minimize the damage. The Dusters made it respectable in the 8th when Rico Carty hit his first major league homer, a two-run shot to right, followed by J.C. Martin's solo blast to left, and it was 7-3. The Reds added their final run in the 9th off Hal Reniff. Downing took the loss, and his record went to 14-5.
